Apr , 2001 Net4India named
the first ‘Keyword Registrar’ in India
by RealNames Corporation
Delhi-based Net4India was
recently named the first ‘Keyword Registrar’
in India by RealNames Corporation. As
a result of this tie-up, Net4India will
sell the Internet keywords to Indian businesses.
In a conversation with Shalini Dagar of
the eFE, Iqbal Gandham, co-founder and
chief technology officer (CTO), Net4India
explains the concept of Internet keywords
and its advantages.
What
are Internet keywords?
Internet keywords are a new layer on top
of the Domain Name System (DNS) which
enables the user to go to just that page
that the user requires in the hundreds
of pages on the Website. It is in fact
a new way of looking up information on
the net. Internet keywords are largely
used for accessing information on particular
company/product/brand.
When and how did the concept emerge?
The concept emerged almost 18-24 months
ago. RealNames Global Registry Services
supports the infrastructure of the Keyword
system and maintains the repository of
Keyword and customer data worldwide. The
Keyword Registration Platform is licensed
to country Registries by RealNames.
What are the advantages of using the Internet
keywords?
Internet keywords provide multiple entrances
or front doors to your Website. With the
help of keywords a company can direct
the consumer directly to that Web page
which he wants. Further, the keywords
provide a means of linking the brand to
the actual site of the company.
For example, the keyword “Alto” will have
the potential to take the browser directly
to that page on Maruti’s Website which
contains information on Alto. With every
extra click one could lose potential customers.
Keywords will help in reducing the number
of those clicks.
What is the cost of registering an Internet
keyword?
Realnames registers these Internet keywords
at $40-50 per annum in the US. Here in
India, keeping in mind the price-sensitive
market that India is, we will be pegging
it at somewhere close to $40. Though the
final price is yet to be decided.
What is the market that you expect for
Internet keywords?
Worldwide, the market for Internet keywords
could well exceed $500 million in four
years time. In India, currently, there
are over 80,000-100,000 domain names.
We expect the potential market for Internet
keywords to be at least two-three times
this number. Normally, a particular company
has one domain name and probably 50-60
products/brands. This concept of keywords
makes it possible for the company to register
the brands separately. In fact, the company
could register the slogan of its currently
running marketing and advertising campaign
also. I would be very happy if we are
able to register 30-50,000 Internet keywords
by Mar 2002.
On what kind of a system can you use Internet
keywords?
Internet keywords can be used only on
Internet Explorer (IE) Version 4 and above.
In IE, the language settings have to be
to set to India, as Internet keywords
is a country-specific concept.
When will this service be available?
The service would be available on Net4India’s
Website — www.net4domain.com — from the
second week of May, 2001.

Net4India
has been
named the first Keyword Registrar
in India by RealNames
HOW MANY times have you
keyed in your innocent query and...oops...the
search engine throws up a whole lot of
undesirable links? Approximately 80 to
90% people know what they are looking
for on the web, but more than half usually
get lost somewhere between entering their
query and screening all the links.
The solution–Keywords
and Net4India has been named the first
Keyword Registrar in India by RealNames,
the global infrastructure provider of
Keywords. Keywords are essentially tools
to get to your site much faster than a
search engine. With the use of keyword,
the problem of remembering long and complex
domain names or links can be reduced drastically,
all you had to do is type in a keyword
in you browser and get connected straight
to the required web page.
The
Keywords system works much like the Domain
Name System that retrieves web sites when
you type a URL or click a link or bookmark
the difference here being that with Internet
Keywords, you can use real words instead
of URLs. "Besides generating a new business
opportunity to registrars like Net4India,
keywords would definitely add to the Brand
usage for companies and products tremendously,"
feels Pankaj Sahni, Manager IT, Bacardi
Martini India. Niraj Ruparel, Manager
IT strategy, Maruti Udyog agrees, "It
would be a great help in defining an integrated
marketing campaign as there would be convergence
of the real brand names with those on
the Net." To
get a feel of how a Keyword would work
for your brand or product, try typing
‘Madonna’ or ‘Nike’ on your browser!
